Meet our Service Delivery Coordinator, Karen Amdal

Meet Karen Amdal, our Service Delivery Coordinator, and the person who makes sure everything’s smooth sailing for the delivery of your project with us.

At NetSG, we’re all about providing seamless connectivity for large and small businesses across Australia, but how do we make it happen?

A big part of what we do comes down to our ability to understand the needs of our partners, carriers, customers, and internal teams – and this is what Karen (our hardworking Service Delivery Coordinator) does oh so well.

Have you worked with Karen before? If not, you’ll likely get the chance! Keep reading to learn a little more about Karen.

How would you describe your job to a class of kindergartners?

As a Service Delivery Coordinator, my job is to make sure the people working in schools, hospitals, banks, and shops have access to the internet. I help people work together and make sure the special equipment and cabling we need to use the internet are installed properly.

What inspired you to pursue this career?

After working in child protection for a number of years, I was ready for a different kind of challenge. And in 2020, when I started working in telecommunications, I got my wish.

Moving from social work to the telecommunications industry was a steep learning curve, but you’d be surprised how many similarities there are too. At its core my role in service delivery is similar to social work – it’s all about people, relationships and communication.

What’s the most exciting thing you are working on right now?

I can’t say too much about it but I’m working on a new project that has a few extra hurdles involved. Thankfully, I love a challenge and I know the end result is going to be worth it.

What’s the best advice you can give to someone who’s just starting their career?

Having a good mentor is an absolute game changer for early career development. If you can, find someone who inspires you and is generous with their knowledge.

I would also say to play to your strengths. Figure out what you’re really good at (and what you love doing), then pursue it.

But don’t get so caught up in your career that you forget to take time for yourself. Maintaining a healthy work/life balance is the often overlooked key to long-term success and happiness.

What are the toughest challenges you’ve had at work?

I think the past few years have been tough on everyone. For me, navigating lockdowns and supply shortages at work, while also homeschooling and keeping my children entertained has been my toughest work challenge to date.

And as much as I do like a challenge, I’m hoping that’s all behind us now!

What was your first job?

More like what wasn’t my first job! I did everything from mowing lawns to fruit picking and babysitting. As an early teen, I took any paid gig that came my way. But, officially, my first job was at McDonald’s.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I loved everything food-related as a kid – I spent lots of time cooking up a storm in the kitchen or raking through recipe books for my next target – so a career in hospitality would’ve been my first choice.

What life skill do you think everyone should learn?

Effective time management is so important for keeping on track – in both your personal and professional life.

And – this should come as no surprise in light of the last question – but I believe everyone should learn how to cook as well. Both skills will serve you well.

Which book or movie do you think everyone should watch in their lifetime?

Although it was published in 1949, George Orwell’s 1984 is eerily relevant to our lives today. I swear, once you’ve read this book, you’ll never see our modern world in the same way (for better or worse).
